Local historian Lisa Y. Henderson and Meredith College professor David McLennan will examine voting barriers and ways in which citizens have and continue to overcome these challenges.
Henderson will discuss the election of Wilson’s first black alderman, despite voter registration challenges and voter suppression efforts that attempted to keep him off the board. McLennan will address some current national trends in voting laws, many of which make it more difficult for citizens to vote, as well as examining strategies used by activists to help citizens fully participate in the electoral process.
