Area IV Envirothon
The Area IV Envirothon is a competitive event to help prepare and qualify students for the State Envirothon Competition. It is open to high school and middle school students in Area IV counties which include:
- Durham
- Edgecombe
- Franklin
- Granville
- Halifax
- Johnston
- Nash
- Vance
- Wake
- Warren
- Wilson
The Area IV Envirothon is scheduled to be held on Thursday, March 2020 in Franklin County, N.C. The location is. Teams will be competing to advance to the State Envirothon, which will be held at Cedarock Park in Burlington, NC on May 3-4, 2020.
Environmental Education Programs
The District staff are available to provide educational resources to schools, civic clubs, or any organization interested in environmental education. The staff will visit classrooms and make presentations to students and assist teachers with environmental education. Please call our office at 252-237-5147 ext. 3 to schedule a presentation for your students or group.
Resource Conservation Workshop
The Annual Resource Conservation Workshop is held in June each year at North Carolina State University. This workshop provides rising sophomores, juniors and seniors a week-long learning experience with concentrations in conservation, forestry, wastewater, and fisheries. If interested in attending please contact the Soil and Water Conservation Office at 252-237-5147 ext. 3.
Environmental Field Days
Fourth graders from Wilson County are invited to attend the event held in October. Students get to learn about wildlife, soil, aquatics, forestry, soil conservation, plants, and animals. Stations for aquatics, soils, and soil conservation are hosted by Wilson Soil and Water staff. Teachers may contact Pam Beamon at Extension Services at 252-237-0111, to schedule for their group to attend.
Contests
The Soil and Water District's poster contest theme for 2019-2020 is "Wetlands are Wonderful" in which third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders participate. Sixth graders may also participate in the essay and slide-show presentation contest. Seventh and eighth graders participate in the public speaking contest. All students must first compete in the District Contest. Students that place first in their categories advance to the Area IV Contest competition, and those first place winners advance to the State Contest.
Awards Banquet
Each year, the Annual Awards Banquet is held in December at the Agricultural Building and recognizes our contest participants from throughout the year. It is made possible by the County and our other sponsors: Perry's Bulldozer Service, Bridgestone Americas,Wilson County Farm Bureau, A. Carroll Coleman of Farm Management Services and Crop Production Services.
