Completing Your Application

Please read the permit application carefully before completing. All applicants must complete the General Information, Application Purpose, and Contractor sections. Then note the heading of the following other sections and only complete those sections that apply to your project. Be sure to provide all information requested by the applicable section.

Residential Section

  • Only for new dwellings, additions to existing dwellings, or accessory buildings
  • Indicate the total square footage of each area as indicated - finished bonus rooms must be included as heated space and unfinished bonus rooms may be included as storage space
  • If the application is for an addition, indicate only the square footage of the addition
  • For the HVAC part of this section, place a check on the line for the type of system to be used. For example, if a single heat pump or gas pack will be used check package unit, or check split for a split system (most two story structures will use multiple systems)

Modular Section

  • Only for modular dwellings
  • North Carolina General Statutes require that anyone who is going to set up a modular dwelling post a Modular Set-Up Bond in the amount of $5,000 or be a licensed general contractor. Check which method will be used.
  • If a bond will be used, the original bond must be provided to the Inspection Department before the permit application will be approved

Manufactured Home Section

  • Only for manufactured / mobile homes (not modulars)
  • The dealer and setup contractor’s license number is required for application to be approved

Commercial Section

  • Only for commercial construction

Contractor Section

  • Provide name, address, phone, and license numbers of all contractors that are intended to be used on the job
  • If the general and subcontractors agree, the general contractor will be allowed to obtain and pay for all required permits at the time the building permit is issued if an authorization form (which the Inspection Department will provide) is completed by the subcontractor that grants the general contractor permission to obtain a permit for the sub.
  • If the general contractor is not going to obtain all permits then the subcontractors needs to be notified that they must obtain their own permits before starting work
  • Be sure to sign and print your name at the bottom of the contractor section
